Civilized Travel Prescribed in Tour Contracts

As the Tourism Law of the People’s Republic of China, which goes into effect on October 1, laid out rules for tourists’ behavior and tour guides’ persuasion of uncivil conducts, tour operators included the “Guidebook for Civilized Overseas Tourism” as contract supplement to prevent such incidents as defacing stone sculpture in ancient Egyptian temple with graffiti.

Xia Jing, marketing director of outbound travel in Hunan, held that contracted travel etiquette and intensive persuasion from tour guides should coincide with media and social supervision as well as moral evaluation to encourage Chinese citizens to improve their manners and behave in a civilized way. Xia highlighted that efforts to promote travel etiquette should be reinforced. The activity of “Exchange Rubbish for Beverage” launched during the National Day holiday at Huaqing Pool in Xi’an, for instance, is a way of advocating no littering.
